Discover Sauvignon Blanc history

Sauvignon blanc is a French grape variery, widely grown in France, the United States, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. The variety was formally identified in the Graves vineyard (Bordeaux) in 1736, and in Pouilly-sur-Loire (Burgundy-Franche-Comté region) in 1783. Young Sauvignon Blanc wines have a very distinctive aroma, with the main flavours being broom, boxwood, blackcurrant buds and cat’s pee. Depending on the climate, there are also citrus fruits (lemon grapefruit), white fruits (peach, pear), dried fruits (hazelnut, almond). Sometimes mineral aromas (gunflint, powder) can be found on certain terroirs and aromas due to noble rot: honey, candied fruits. Sauvignon Blanc is known as blanc doux, blanc fumé, douce blanche, feigentraube, fié, fumé blanc, Muskat-Sylvaner. The first Friday in May is International Sauvignon Blanc Day. Sauvignon Blanc, when slightly chilled, goes well with fish or cheese, especially goat. It is also known as one of the few wines that goes well with sushi.
