Discover Malbec history

Malbec is a French grape variety, which probably comes form the region of the former province of Querry. During the Renaissance, Malbec was introduced into the Loire Valley and planted abundantly. The devastating Phylloxera practically wiped out this grape variety in France, which accounted for almost 80% of the vineyards in Blaye and Bourg in Bordeaux. The considerable number of different growing areas in France explains why Malbec has several synonyms such as Auxerrois, Pressiac or Côt. The French agronomist Michel Pouget introduced Malbec in 1808 in Argentina. The vines are very well adapted to local conditions. They allow the production of wines with a finesse that can rival that of southwestern France. Malbec lilac wines are renowned for their spicy fruitiness, often showing typical notes of plum and tobacco. Sometimes one also discovers the taste of juniper, blue and laurel, cherries and dark chocolate. However, sufficient maturity is essential to avoid grassy flavours. Professional and meticulous work results in colourful and intense wines with a tannin content that allows for ageing in wooden barrels.
