Before the area of genetic analysis there were several theories about the origin of Syrah, such as the city of Shiraz in Iran or Syracuse in Sicily. Today, researchers from California and Montpellier have demonstrated that Syrah is the result of a natural cross between Mondeuse Blanche (a white grape variety from Haute-Savoie) and Dureza, a red grape variety from Ardèche. Thus, its cradle is located in the northern Rhône valley from where it migrated to the south of France at the beginning of the 19th century. It was quickly exported outside of France: California, Australia (where it is the most widespread grape), South Africa, Argentina. The spread of Syrah, from North to South, has brought about changes in the bouquet of the wines. In the northern Côtes du Rhône, floral aromas such as peppery violet predominate. Over time, an aromatic ensemble can bring out truffles and liquorice. In the south, the Syrah aromatic complex is mainly dominated by scents of small red and black fruits: raspberry, blackcurrant, blueberry, sometimes candied.
Syrah knows how to convince with aromatic power and length on the palate. Other peculiarities are its alcoholic richness, silky tannins and its relatively low acidity. Its tannic structure gives it an interesting aging potential. Syrah is among the grape varieties whose wines are riches in resveratrol, a molecule of which several clinical tests have shown the cardioprotective, antioxidant and anticarcinogenic effects.
At the culinary level, Syrah makes it a wine preferably to accompany red meats, game and barbecue meats. Also, this grape goes perfectly with a good pizza!
